Click It or Ticket, a national campaign coordinated annually by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to increase the proper use of seat belts, takes place May 18–31, 2015.

Using a seat belt is one of the most effective ways to prevent serious injury or death in the event of a crash. Using lap/shoulder seat belts can reduce the risk of fatal injury by almost 50%. In 2013, more than 21,000 passenger vehicle occupants died in motor vehicle crashes in the United State; 49% were unrestrained at the time of the crash. An additional 2.4 million nonfatal injuries were treated in emergency departments in 2013. Yet, millions of persons continue to travel unrestrained.

During the 2015 Click it or Ticket campaign, law enforcement agencies across the nation will conduct intensive, high-visibility enforcement of seat belt laws, during both daytime and nighttime hours. Nighttime enforcement of seat belt laws is encouraged because seat belt use is lower at night.

FDOT (Florida Department of Transportation) reports the following:

The land traffic impacts are final and are as follows:

Vehicles/Pedestrians:

  • North Riverside Drive, which serves as a u-turn underneath the bridge, will be closed for the duration of construction.
  • One lane of the A1A Bridge over the Hillsboro Inlet may be closed nightly from 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday evenings through late May. Flagmen will guide motorists across the bridge.
  • The bridge will be closed continuously to all vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians from 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, May 26 to 11:59 p.m. Saturday, June 13. This closure is necessary to replace key bridge components that allow the opening and closing of the bascule leaf, replace the steel bridge deck, and paint the bridge machinery room. During this closure land traffic will be detoured via NE 14th Street and Hillsboro Boulevard to US 1.
  • The bridge will be closed to all vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians weekdays from Monday, June 15 through Thursday, July 2 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. These closures are necessary to replace key bridge components that allow the opening and closing of the bascule leaf, replace the steel bridge deck, and paint the bridge. During these daytime closures, land traffic will be detoured via NE 14th Street and Hillsboro Boulevard to US 1.

Marine vessel impacts have not been finalized.  Here is what FDOT is reporting:

FDOT is currently awaiting final information about the marine impacts, particularly the opening schedule during the upcoming closures. The contractor is coordinating with the Coast Guard and will have a response from them soon regarding this. As always, we will advise once we here from FDOT.

Traffic Impact:

  • North Riverside Drive underneath the bridge is closed for the duration of construction.
  • The bridge is closed overnight to navigation between 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. through April 30. Mariners may request an opening during this time by providing a four-hour advance notice to the bridge tender or by calling (954) 943-1847.
  • The vertical clearance of the bridge will be reduced by 2 feet for the duration of the project.
  • The north and south side channels will be closed to navigation for the duration of the project because of on-going work in the channels.
  • For further marine traffic information, please review the Coast Guard’s Local Notice to Mariners for the Seventh District at http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=lnmDistrict&region=7.

Construction Report for the Inlet Bridge

Over the past few weeks, crews removed the concrete in the first two spans of the bridge and started work on the reinforcement for the new sidewalk and the structural work required for the new bridge tender house.

Please be advised that night work is scheduled for Monday, March 16 through Thursday, March 19 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., which requires a single lane closure while crews work on the deck and the installation of the temporary railings for the bascule spanAdditionally, the contractor has extended their work shifts which are now from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The project team continues coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard in an effort to minimize impacts to the public during construction. Drivers and boaters should exercise caution during construction by reducing their speed as they drive across the bridge or navigate underneath it.
